Four Springs is a documentary film that presented a family’s daily life in the remote town of Dushan in the Guizhou province in southwest China. From a subjective angle, the camera induced the flow of life out of the screen: the quotidian toils, singing, excursions in nature, visits among friends and extended families, funerals, reunions and departures. It presented the state of being of the two main characters, the director’s own parents, and their attitude when facing irretrievable loss in life.
Director Lu Qingyi was born in 1973. He used to learn oil painting and got an opportunity to play football in a professional football team. Unfortunately, because of losing the game, his dream of becoming a great football player was dead. In 1997, he was offered a job working in a publisher by chance. After that, he chose to be a singer in a bar between times. Not knowing his lifelong goals, he decided to work in mine of Luodian County, Guizhou Province and he experienced the life of a miner for half a year. In 2002, he learned 3D animation and worked as a designer. In 2005 he found an advertising company, which all failed at last. Then he bought a camera and lived a vagrant life again. After two years, he made a living with photography until now. Four Springs is his first filmmaking work, which took four years to film and two years to edit.
